OPINION: Could Superintendent Deasy be replaced with an iPad?

David LyellJuly 2, 2013, wasn’t just another day. On that day, there was a LAUSD School Board meeting unlike any other in recent memory.
Each year, at the first LAUSD Board meeting in July, the seven School Board members (laschoolboard.org) vote to elect a president. While the School Board president doesn’t have expanded powers, the position affords an opportunity to set the tone, run Board meetings, and work closely with the superintendent to determine meeting agendas.
At the July 2 Board meeting, three members began a four-year term: District 2 Board Member Monica Garcia, District 4 Board Member Steve Zimmer, and District 6 Board Member Monica Ratliff.
When the U.S. Supreme Court wrongly ruled (my opinion) in 2010 (Citizens United vs. Federal

Guest Post: Guiding Principals - How to Recognize Innovative Leaders

EWA's 66th National Seminar was recently held at Stanford University, and we asked some of the education reporters attending to contribute blog posts from the sessions, including one examining President Obama's universal preschool proposal. Today's guest blogger is Hattie Brown Garrow of the Virginian-Pilot. Stream any session from National Seminar in your browser, or subscribe via RSS or iTunes. For more on school leadership and governance, visit EWA's Story Starters online resource.

Want to know whether a school is truly innovative?

Talk to the students. Are they able to reflect on what they’re learning? Or do they simply say what they’re doing? Observe group work closely. Students must work together for an assignment to truly be collaborative. The “divide and conquer” strategy doesn’t foster deep learning.

And if every student project looks the same, that’s not innovation.

That’s the advice of Michelle Spencer, principal at New Technology High in Napa,

Celebrity cash fueling Cory Booker's Senate dreams

THE RECORD

Newark Mayor Cory Booker is tapping high-tech billionaires, Wall Street hedge-fund managers and Hollywood’s A-list as he builds a bankroll for this year’s special U.S. Senate election — and beyond.
Booker is taking four times the limit for one election from deep-pocketed donors, apparently presuming that he will need money to run for a full term next year after he wins the primary and general election this year to fill the remainder of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s term.
Booker raised $4.6 million between April and June, and a 1,385-page report that became public Tuesday shows dozens of donors, including New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and business-woman/heiress Ivanka Trump, giving $10,400.
That’s four times the legal maximum of $2,600 per election. Booker was able to take that much because he is accepting contributions for four elections at the same time: This year’s Aug. 13 special primary, the Oct. 16 special general election, and the primary and genera

I Am Not a "Highly Effective" Teacher!: Student Test Scores Have Spoken!

I saw this tweet after I had already written this post, and I thought, "How perfect!"

I found out today that I am an only an "effective" teacher as opposed to "highly effective."

I received my summative evaluation in June and I received a Satisfactory. Now don't get me wrong, I don't think "I'm all that and a bag of chips", but I felt I deserved more than a Satisfactory. So, I challenged it.

That's how I found out I am not a "highly effective" teacher. It's not because I don't engage my students, It's not because I don't find every way possible to involve my parents. It's not because I don't collaborate with my peers. It's not that I don't  meet the requirements of a highly effective teacher according to that infographic. It's not that I don't go above and beyond. (And understand I do these things because I choose to, because it makes it better for my

State Comptroller Matthew Boxer, investigated fraud in the National School Lunch Program

By Ted Sherman andChristopher Baxter/The Star-Ledger
TRENTON — In a report to be released Wednesday, the Office of the State Comptroller said it found widespread fraud in the state’s school lunch program.
Officials said the report, which will be made public by comptroller Matthew Boxer, details fraud in the National School Lunch Program in New Jersey school districts, including by public employees and public officials.
The investigation comes in the wake of a series of stories by The Star-Ledger into lunch program abuses in Elizabeth, where the president of the school board was indicted after the newspaper found her children were receiving subsidized meals despite a family income far exceeding federal eligibility limits set by the federal government.
The state attorney general’s office said it launched its investigation into the Elizabeth program after The Star-Ledger reported that the children of Marie L. Munn, then serving as board president, were enrolled in the program. At the time, her financial disclosure statements showed she was employed as a human resources administrator for a nonprofit organization and her husband, who was employed by the New York

After all, you’re old. You don’t need much. You don’t need to buy expensive fresh vegetables when your belly would be just as full with a Big Mac. What do you want to do, live forever?
Your house should be paid for, and your kids should be able to buy you new Pay-For-Less shoes once a year, maybe at Christmas or your birthday. If your house isn’t paid for, it should have been. Since you just sit in front of your TV all day, why would you
