UPDATE: Proud of a couple of former students Daily Kos: 59 years ago today

Daily Kos: 59 years ago today:

A proposal for complete transparency

or else complete anonymity.
Nor\ person, including corporate persons, shall be allowed to mix open contributions and anonymous contributions to organizations classified as 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4).
Either all such contributions shall be opened and the donor identified, or all such contributions shall be anonymous with the donor receiving no recognition of any kind.
Think about it.  The likes of the Koch brothers want to be praised for their contributions to arts organizations, but if they want that recognition all their donations to 501(c)(4)s would also have to be public.
Remember,

Proud of a couple of former students

who both participated at the 2013 INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair that finished today.
Neel Lakshman got a Second Award of $500 U.S. savings bond  from the AVASC Foundation, which is a very big deal in India
Aaron Solomon finished second in Environmental Management
By the way, this is the world's largest such event, and it had more than 1,500 high school students from more than 70 countries, regions, and territories displaying their independent research.
I had absolutely nothing to do with their success in this, since they were my students only for AP US Government and Politics, but i am still proud of them - and I did have SOMETHING  to do with their both getting 5s on the AP exam for that course.
Congratulations guys.  What a way to complete your high school careers.
It was an honor - and sometimes a challenge - having them as students.

the Supreme Court of the United States UNANIMOUSLY issued two important decisions about public schools.
The better known is Brown v. Board of Education, in which in his opinion Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote
to separate them from others of similar age and qualifications solely because of their race generates a feeling of inferiority as to their status in the community that may affect their hearts and minds in a way unlikely ever to be undone. . . . Segregation of white and colored children in public schools has a detrimental effect upon the colored children. The impact is greater when it has the sanction of the law, for the policy of separating the races is usually interpreted as denoting the inferiority of the negro group. A sense of inferiority affects the motivation of a child to learn. Segregation with the sanction of law, therefore, has a tendency to [retard] the educational and mental development of negro children and to deprive them of some of the benefits they would receive in a racial[ly] integrated school system.

Early update on Leaves - very good news!

I am writing this today, because she is going to go out of town by herself, for a birding trip with some of her family, and to serve as godmother for the baptism of her brother's daughter, and thus will not be here this weekend.
Tuesday we saw her oncologist.  The blood chemistry is that she is doing great, remarkably well.   The doctor is so pleased she said she would have no trouble with Leaves going off chemo for a while in order for the neurosurgeon to try to fix her back.  We see the neurosurgeon on the 30th, and this is very important.  So long
