During this Save Our Schools hosted Webinar, Teachers Jesse Hagopian, Sonya Romero Smith, David Wilson, Nadia Zananiri, Okaikor Aryee-Price, Becca Ritchie, Margo Murray, and Lauren Cohen will speak to the struggle in their schools. In addition each will share how we might truly appreciate what is being done by Teachers and all the people to preserve and protect Public Education.

Educators will tell their stories, speak to the struggle in their schools, and in addition each will share how we might truly appreciate what is being done by them, and others, to preserve and protect Public Education. Teachers from around the country honored and highlighted for their efforts.

Jesse Hagopian

Jesse Hagopian – Seattle, Washington
Jesse Hagopian teaches history and is the Black Student Union adviser at Garfield High School, the site of the historic boycott of the MAP test in 2013. Jesse is an associate editor of the acclaimed Rethinking Schoolsmagazine and was recipient of the 2012 Abe Keller Foundation award for “excellence and innovation in peace education”, and a 2013 Secondary Teacher of Year nominee by Academy of Education Arts and Sciences.
Jesse is a public speaker, author, activist, and founding member of the Social Equality Educators (SEE) organization. Jesse is a contributing author to 101 Changemakers: Rebels and Radicals Who Changed US History and Education and Capitalism: Struggles for Learning and Liberation (Haymarket Books).
Sonya Romero Smith 

Sonya Romero Smith – Albuquerque , New Mexico
Sonya Romero Smith I have been a Kindergarten Bilingual teacher at Lew Wallace Elementary School for the last 10 years with my expertise and experience in best practices for Early Childhood. I have been a bilingual teacher for 16 years for the Albuquerque Public Schools and I’ve taught grades K-5 in different Bilingual capacities during this time. I am a National Boards candidate as an Early Childhood Generalist.
Additionally, I am also a Public Education Department of New Mexico appointee for the NMTEACH council that has played an active role in the design, creation, and implementation of the proposed teacher evaluation for the state of New Mexico. I serve as a teacher of teacher’s facilitator for the Albuquerque Teachers Federation and teach a class monthly to mentor teachers on educational best practices and pedagogy. As an active member ATF, I have been passionately involved in advocacy and activism for the teachers, students, and families of New Mexico. I was recently appointed Executive Vice President of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation.
David Wilson

David Wilson – Santa Fe, New Mexico
David A. Wilson was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and raised in Columbia, Missouri. He attended public schools in Columbia and later attended the University of Michigan where he majored in anthropology. After two years teaching in a preschool in Boston’s South End, he spent a year in Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa, where he was an English-French interpreter and translator on a rural development project. Upon returning to the U.S. he settled in New Mexico where he obtained a master’s in education from the University of New Mexico while teaching in the Albuquerque Public Schools. He is currently in his 26th year as a dual language (English-Spanish) teacher.
In 2010 David entered the University of New Mexico as a doctoral student in the department of Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies where his interests include bilingual education, critical education studies, and the current neo-liberal “reform” movement of which he has been an attentive observer and commentator for the last ten years. David maintains a blog entitled Teach Truth to Power in which he comments on current education trends: teachtruthtopower.blogspot.com. You can reach David at aram@unm.edu
Okaikor Aryee-Price

Okaikor Aryee-Price – Jersey City, New Jersey
Okaikor Aryee-Price is a doctoral student with a concentration on Design of Learning Environments at Rutgers University. She is a Language Arts teacher in Hackensack after teaching in Jersey City, New Jersey for 11 years. Okaikor is a former department coordinator, activist, wife, mom, SOS March member, and IDEA organizer. Okaikor is passionate about her students, and learning environments that encourage curiosity, creativity, community, and life long learning.
Nadia Zananiri

Nadia Zananiri – Miami Florida
Nadia Zananiri graduated with a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley and holds a Masters of Science in Social Studies Curriculum and Instruction from Florida International University. She has been teaching world history at Miami Beach High School for nine years and served as an AP world history mentor teacher for the Miami Dade County school district. In response to rapid changes in the teaching profession, she started a blog and the Facebook group Florida Parents and Educators for Legislative Change. Her blog posts have run in Education Week and Diane Ravitch’s blog. Nadia blogs at kafkateach.
Becca Ritchie

Becca Ritchie – Save Our Schools Informstion Coordinator
Becca Ritchie is one of the many Washington Education Association members who spent a week at the New Organizing Institute this past September. She hails the Rainer UniServ council in Washington state. Becca has been active in her Union at local and state levels. She participated in the NO I Boot Camp.
Becca Ritchie is a veteran middle school teacher of 22 years in the Renton School District. She began her teaching career in general music, choir, and drama. After four years of teaching the arts, Becca shifted her focus and received a Master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Instructional Technology. During her early years as an educator, Becca started the Nelsen Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society and received aNational Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE) grant that allowed her to design programs to promote technology in the community; this grant also provided sufficient software that enabled her district to establish an online network. Becca received the “Heroes in the Classroom” award in 2011.
Becca has been an active member of SOS as an Information Coordinator, and she has willingly assumed various leadership, guidance, and management roles within the organization.
Margo Murray

Margo Murray – Chicago Teacher
Margo Murray is a Chicago Teacher with near thirty years of experience at Chicago Board of Education. Ms Murray a CORE delegate and District Supervisor. She has been involved with the school closing fight since 2009. Margo has tried to prevent school closings and I have tried to work for preventing school closings. She works on several committees within the union, including Teacher Evaluation, Testing, and Special Education.




Lauren Cohen 

Lauren Cohen – New York, New York
Lauren Cohen is a New York Teacher. She teaches 5th grade at a NYC public school in Brooklyn. Lauren is a representative with MORE; Movement of Rank and File Educators (The Social Justice Caucus of the United Federation of Teachers.) She also actively works within Change The Stakes.
