Instructions for the October 17 Campaign for Our Public Schools

Great news!
Anthony Cody, experienced middle school science teacher and fabulous blogger, has offered to coordinate our campaign to write President Obama on October 17.
We call it the Campaign for Our Public Schools.
Anthony previously ran his own campaign called “Teachers’ Letters to Obama.” He is a champion for teachers, kids, and public education.
Our campaign is meant to include everyone who cares about public education: students, parents, teachers, principals, school board members, and concerned citizens. We want everyone to write the President and tell him

Helping Students Motivate Themselves: Practical Answers to Classroom Challenges

I was very excited to have the opportunity to read Helping Students Motivate Themselves: Practical Answers to Classroom Challenges by Larry Ferlazzo, a California teacher who writes the blog Classroom Q&A for Education Week. The book confirmed many of the strategies and tools I use in my classroom and emphasized the important roles that relationships and metacognition play in motivation and successful classrooms.
From the beginning Ferlazzo is clear that “This book is not designed as a road map; rather, it should serve as a compass to point us and our students in the right direction.” To point readers in the right direction, the book is set up in a format that is very easy to follow. Each section begins with a hypothetical question or statement you might typically hear from a teacher. For example:
I work so hard at trying to get these kids motivated. Some are, but so many aren’t. They just seem to want to get by—if that. I try to encourage them—I’m their biggest cheerleader! But it can get so tiring. I feel like I’m pushing a rope with some of my students. Why can’t they just want to achieve instead of having to be pushed into it?
Ferlazzo then offers background information and perspective that teachers can use to develop a better

Students in the western state of Michoacan seized 15 buses and 18 delivery trucks belonging to firms such as Coca-Cola and baking giant Bimbo as part of protests against a proposed overhaul of Mexican labor law.
The bill, which would facilitate outsourcing and make it easier for firms to hire and fire workers, was approved last weekend by the lower house and is now before the Senate
Sources in the state government said the delivery trucks were commandeered by students at the Rural Normal School in Cheran, a settlement of Purepecha Indians.
Besides the labor overhaul, the students were protesting changes to the curriculum at Mexico’s

In the last three years, Los Angeles Unified has had to cut nearly $1.5 billion from its annual operating budget, which is now roughly $6 billion. "Arts education is one of the most impacted components of LAUSD instruction as a result," according to the district.
I'm still working on getting specific breakdowns on arts education funding from L.A. Unified, but in the meantime, here are some numbers the district had handy.

A NEW MERIT PAY PROPOSAL

I have a group of workers that should be considered right along with teachers for merit pay. These workers are like teachers in so many ways. They care deeply about the people they cater to.  They only have a limited time to work with the people they are responsible for. (Yikes two sentences in a row that end in prepositions). They aren’t in their profession for the money. The people they are helping come with many different types of problems and come from a variety of backgrounds. They are well-respected, but not nearly as much as in the past. They rely on local people for their salary. They do not work for a business. They put in many hours of work that the average person is unaware of. They tend to be more efficient at their jobs as their tenure grows.
I am writing about merit pay for priests, rabbis, ministers, imams  and all other religious leaders. The pay for

NYC Educator: No Good Deed Goes Unpunished.: No Good Deed Goes Unpunished. by NYC Educator Actually, in the case of unions, it probably doesn't matter whether the deed was good, bad or otherwise. The editorial pages made up their minds long ago. UFT President Michael Mulgrew wrote an opinion piecein the Daily News, explaining that it is, in fact, Bloomberg who's blocking the much-vaunted evaluation system that we've all been reading about. Mulgrew correctly points out that there is a framework, and that he was instrumental in establishing it. UFT sources have told me that Bloombe... more »

All Things Education: In Virginia, the Bigotry of Crude Expectations

All Things Education: In Virginia, the Bigotry of Crude Expectations: The Bigotry of Crude Expectations by Rachel Levy Recently (or not so recently by the time I'm posting this), the state of Virginia was granted a waiver from NCLB requirements. This has been a relief for many, but it's also caused further stress, in that it exchanges one yoke for another. Fairfax County, for example, had no plans to evaluate their teachers according to the standardized test scores of their students, but now is being required to due to conditions of the waiver. However, because the goals in the ... more »

Diane Ravitch's blog: Ideas for an archive? by dianerav Looks like we will get a sizable number of people to write letters to President Obama on October 17. Tim Furman suggests we set up a place to collect copies and share them. I don’t know how to do this. Anyone have an idea? The Invisible Children, Left Out of the Obama-Romney Debate by dianerav Jersey Jazzman wonders how our two candidates for President spent two hours discussing domestic issues without noticing our nation’s greatest scandal: the nearly one in four children who live in poverty. “High-Stakes Testing is Out ... more »

Team Vallas: Saving money by giving the same standardized test to 9th, 10th and 11th graders? - Wait, What?: Team Vallas: Saving money by giving the same standardized test to 9th, 10th and 11th graders? by jonpelto In order to understand things correctly, we have a question for Team Vallas. As we have come to learn, you all, as the experienced “education reformers” among us, believe that more standardized testing leads to an environment in which students will learn more. With that as one of your guiding principles, Team Vallas determined that Bridgeport students would be better off... more »

Schools Matter: Schools (Don't?) Matter, Nor Does Creativity

Schools Matter: Schools (Don't?) Matter, Nor Does Creativity: Schools (Don't?) Matter, Nor Does Creativity by Storm Okay, I'll confess to being less than tactful most of the time. But I gotta tell you, I'm pretty sick of one particular complaint that I hear (rather, read) again and again on education sites and FB pages dedicated to parent organizations against testing regimes in public education: "Your stealing my child's creativity!" First, there's no such thing. ...since the criterion of creativity cannot distinguish between the artist and the nonartist, anyone who calls himse... more »

It is what it is. But what if it’s WRONG? « @ the chalk face: It is what it is. But what if it’s WRONG?2 October 4, 2012 by slekar Last night I attended my local school board meeting to use my three minutes of public comment time to address the board. I was there to continue my comments from last school year on teacher evaluations and why the board should at least think about the consequences when our teachers and principals will be forced to have 50% of their evaluation determined by the invalid high stakes test scores of the children taking these invalid measurements. Here’s wh... more »

Shanker Blog » Assessing Ourselves To Death

Shanker Blog » Assessing Ourselves To Death: Assessing Ourselves To Death by Matthew Di Carlo I have two points to make. The first is something that I think everyone knows: *Educational outcomes, such as graduation and test scores, are signals of or proxies for the traits that lead to success in life, not the cause of that success*. For example, it is well-documented that high school graduates earn more, on average, than non-graduates. Thus, one often hears arguments that increasing graduation rates will drastically improve students’ future prospects, and the performance of the ec... more »

Choice?? When and why? « Deborah Meier on Education

Choice?? When and why? « Deborah Meier on Education: Choice?? When and why? by debmeier Re Choice. I just got an e-mail from someone who expresses surprise that anyone would not want choices between schools. Interesting. We’re led to believe that everyone wants school choice. But it’s more complex than that. Some surely do–for whatever reasons–and what should we do then? We have to balance lots of “goods” vs “bads” and figure out what we’re willing to trade off for what we value even more? Or how we can minimize the bad and maximize the good!!! When we pretended that all schools... more »

Diane R. goes to Texas | Parents Across America: Diane R. goes to Texas by pureparents From PAA founding member Karen Miller: When I found out Diane was speaking at the school board/administrators convention, I asked her if she’d extend her stay and she agreed to remain an extra day. Lorie (Barzano, of PAA affiliate Coalition-SAUS) did a fantastic job with local arrangements, including a parent/teacher/community meeting at a high school in a low income area subject to takeover. I’ll let her describe that wonderful event (see below). We worked closely with the school board/admin... more »

What Obama’s debate performance says about his education policy - The Answer Sheet - The Washington Post

What Obama’s debate performance says about his education policy - The Answer Sheet - The Washington Post: What Obama’s debate performance says about his education policy By Valerie Strauss In the wake of President Obama’s lackluster performance in his first debate with Mitt Romney, commentators have suggested that part of the president’s problem was that during his time in the White House, he (like (Craig F. Walker/AP)other presidents before him) has rarely been challenged. People don’t interrupt him, tell him he is being obtuse and that he is dead wrong. So what does this have to d... more »

Missing the Real Story on Student Attrition at Charters | Edwize: Missing the Real Story on Student Attrition at Charters by Christina Collins At a time when the question of how to best serve our neediest students at all schools is a key focus at the local and national levels, media analyses of the impact of student attrition at charters and district schools can be a useful contribution to the discussion. Unfortunately, an article recently published by SchoolBook misses the key point of this question in its failure to acknowledge that charter attrition’s effects come not from the ... more »
