United Way, U-T halfway to education volunteer goal


A joint campaign by U-T San Diego and United Way of San Diego County to sign up 4,500 volunteers to work with K-12 students is at the halfway point and on target.
Organizers say more than 2,000 people have pledged to volunteer as readers, tutors and mentors to help in local schools since September.
“It is a wonderful outpouring of interest,” said Karen Sprigle, senior vice president and chief administrative officer at United Way of San Diego County. “People wanted to get involved and get engaged. People are really hearing about it and responding to the call.”
