"I don’t know Ravitch (and don't agree with her on many points), but totally get her passion about the need to create more comprehensive ways of measuring student progressand dedication to under-served students."

A Restraint On The Patriotism, Please

I stood in my classroom on Monday morning, worn out from awaiting President Barack Obama’s announcement, waiting for the Pledge of Allegiance. Growing impatient with the pledge, I began to twirl the chalk in my hand while my students also reluctantly stood there. Anxious about next week’s math test, I scribbled the Objective and Do Now on the board when a student looked at me in her bubbly naivete and asked, “Mr. Vilson, what happened yesterday?”

“Not sure what you mean.”

“Well, like, something happened last night with something, like, really big.”

“You mean, Osama bin Laden?”

“Yeah, something like that. What was the big deal?”

I had to forgive her immediately. When the really big deal happened, she was only 3-4 years old, still piecing together the world presented to her. She couldn’t understand how tons of steel and cement decimated into

Tweeting Jo Anderson.

There was a tweet on the Catalyst-Chicago Twitter site that said, “Anderson: Unions’ survival depends on involvement in #edreform . Otherwise, unions that lose on “bread & butter” issues will be irrelevant.”

I didn’t count. Is that 140 characters?

“Anderson” is Jo Anderson, former Executive Director of the IEA and now a senior adviser to EdSec Arne Duncan.

It’s an oddly constructed tweet. I think I get it, but I don’t want to assume too much.

I consider Jo a friend. We saw and greeted each other just last Sunday at the rededication of Haymarket monument.

But here are some questions that occurred to me when I read the tweet.

Aren’t teacher unions involved in reform already and haven’t

We DO Make a Difference!(No Matter What You’ve Heard)

Just before Spring Break, I asked my 5th graders if any of them wanted to enter the contest, “Why My Teacher is Great!”. Only two students completed the letter. One was an Honor Roll student and the other was a girl I had trouble with from Day 1! I have to say, within the last two months, she has been a different child. I want to share her letter.

My teacher is great because she keeps us on track about getting into 6th grade. She never lets us say we can’t do it. She only tells us we can do it. Whenever we get mad, she always knows what to say. She is the best teacher in the whole wide world. She is great, whatever she does. When it comes to tests, she always makes us feel better about the test. She knows how to say no. She seldom yells at us students she always talks to us in a nice tone of voice. Whenever we need help, she will try not to give us the answer, but try to help us out with it. She always tells us, “I can’t help you, unless you help yourself.” And now we help ourselves, as well as she helps us. My teacher is the best of the best. She keeps us in order like four by four.

There are some rules as well. 1st rule is treat others the way you wanted to be treated. 2nd, be a leader not a follower. And 3rd,always use kind words. She also says, “Your actions, your responsibility.” And we always listen to those words.

She always knows what to say when we are having problems
