Some school districts could go bankrupt, state superintendent says in Camarillo visit

Some school districts could go bankrupt and be taken over by the state because of budget cuts expected to take effect in January, California's top public-school official told educators Tuesday in Camarillo.

"A majority of the districts in the state have prepared for a $300-per-student midyear cut, but some have not," said Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of public instruction. "I think we'll see several districts go bankrupt. I think we'll see the state taking over several districts as a consequence."

He was the keynote speaker at a Ventura County Office of Education forum at the agency's Camarillo headquarters. About 300 attended, most of them school
