The War on Urban Literacy

According to Valerie, Chicago is one of the cities "signing on" to this Campaign For Grade-Level Reading thing.

Let's just remember that this is a city where 160 of our public elementary schools don't have libraries or librarians and where most of the branch libraries are closed on Sundays. By contrast, out in the high-achieving, heavily unionized suburbs, schools have libraries and librarians, and the public libraries have Sunday hours.
