Oregon teacher union hosts first-ever education summit with state leaders, teachers, Gov. John Kitzhaber

Oregon’s largest and most politically powerful education union held a first-ever summit on education today, inviting teachers, state legislators and Gov. John Kitzhaber to a day-long discussion on how to reform and transform public education.

The event included about 125 education officials, teachers, business, non-profit, and legislative leaders. Most agreed that Oregon’s education system is in need of substantial change and not just more money.

Gov. John Kitzhaber closed out the event, reinforcing the need for reform. He proposed providing more money to public schools in the first year of the 2011-13 budget cycle to give education
