Sacramento teachers union plans protest of documentary - Sacramento News - Local and Breaking Sacramento News | Sacramento Bee

A documentary aiming to inspire Americans to address issues in public education has also created a bitter dispute between those who call themselves education reformers and many teachers and their union representatives.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama used a special White House conference Tuesday to tout the nation's community colleges as offering a path to the American dream for underprivileged citizens and as essential centers for training the 21st-century work force.

Following a private screening of the documentary "Waiting for 'Superman' " on Tuesday night in Sacramento, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and a panel of reform-minded speakers said it's time to make major changes in a broken public education system.

California's budget crisis has put the squeeze on community colleges. In the last year they've seen layoffs, furloughs and cuts in course offerings. Meanwhile, a record number of students have applied as they seek new job skills or put off looking for work in a tough economy.
