Officials may seek DA’s office review

Arlington selectmen may seek an independent review by the Middlesex district attorney’s office of a $1.5 million deficit in the school district’s budget that has surprised and angered a number of town officials.

The officials, including the School Committee chairman, the town manager, and members of the Board of Selectmen, said they did not learn about the extent of the 2010 fiscal year’s deficit until last month; the budget period ended June 30.

While officials said there is no indication that any misappropriation led to the shortfall, they may invoke an infrequently used law to track overspending by the
