Almost 3,000 Mass. seniors won't get diplomas

BOSTON—State education officials say nearly 3,000 high school seniors from across the state will not get their diplomas next month because they have not yet passed the MCAS science exam.

The state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education says the students unable to earn diplomas represent about 4 percent of this year's public school senior class. More than half of those students also have not passed at least one of the other MCAS exams, in English and math, also necessary for graduation.
