Shasta County schools tell why they didn't apply for federal Race to the Top money Redding Record Searchlight:

"More than 800 California school districts have applied for funding through President Barack Obama's Race to the Top educational reform initiative.

California could receive up to $700 million of the $4.35 billion in grants awarded to states.

Part of the Obama administration's economic stimulus package, California Department of Education officials say it is 'the single largest pool of discretionary funding for education reform in U.S. history.'

Even with that much money on the line, 11 of the 25 school districts in Shasta County - 44 percent - have opted not to apply for the grant."
