TV, Radio, Print Ads Focus on Teacher-Led Reforms and Well-Rounded Education that Ensures Student Success



As educators, we know what really works to improve student learning. It’s why we’ve led efforts to turn around hundreds of lower-performing schools. BURLINGAME—The California Teachers Association launched a series of television, radio, print and online ads this week. The ads spotlight teacher-led reforms and the need for a well-rounded education as well as stopping the overemphasis on standardized testing, all of which leading to strong public schools and student success.
In the ads, teachers speak up about successful educator efforts to turn around low performing schools, and the need for proven reforms like smaller class sizes and curriculum that includes art, music, and career-technical education and urge the public to discuss education with a classroom teacher who has the expert knowledge about what students need to succeed. All the ads can be viewed and heard here.
The ads will run in every media market in California including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Fresno, Sacramento, and Santa Barbara. Both English and Spanish versions of the ads are in rotation. Print ads in 12 different languages will run in statewide ethnic newspapers—including Asian, Latino and African American. The campaign will also include online ads focusing on the quality public schools and colleges all students deserve.
The educators appearing in the commercials are Rosi Alvarez, Yuba City Teachers Association; Terry Barber, Elk Grove Education Association; Karina Curiel, Gonzales Teachers Association; Charlie Turner, California Faculty Association; Adam Ebrahim, Fresno Teachers Association; Janet Robertson, Fairfield-Suisun Unified Teachers Association; Carol Peek, Ventura Education Support Professionals Association; and Peter Fuentes, Elk Grove Education Association.
“It’s important for the public to hear from educators as we are settling in to the new school year. Bringing educators into homes in our communities creates a connection to what we all want for our students, schools and colleges,” said CTA President Dean E. Vogel. “That’s why these ads are so important. We encourage parents and community members to work with educators in our schools, because when we work together we all make a difference. So, if you have a question about your local public school, ask a teacher.”
The campaign is part of an annual effort to highlight public education issues as California students head back to school in the fall.
