On May 15, the civil and human rights community will honor American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten with its highest honor, the Hubert H. Humphrey Civil and Human Rights Award, for her lifelong commitment to improving America’s education system.
At the 1.5 million-member AFT, Weingarten represents teachers, higher education faculty and staff, health care professionals, and other school-related local, state, and government employees. In addition to her previous responsibilities as president of New York’s United Federation of Teachers, she has been held in the highest regard as a labor leader, attorney, and educator, and has led efforts to make education reform a prominent issue on national and union agendas.
Weingarten has been a leading voice in dialogue among parents, teachers, community partners, and public officials regarding equal access to quality education. She also plays a critical role in the coalition as a member of the board of The Leadership Conference.
Visit our Hubert H. Humphrey Civil and Human Rights Award Dinner page for more information about tickets, sponsorship, and our two other nominees – Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa and leading labor and immigrant rights advocate Eliseo Medina
