Lawsuit filed today in NY State Court to block inBloom and protect student privacy

This morning, the law firm Pitta & Giblin LLP sued Commissioner King and the Board of Regents in NY State Supreme Court on behalf of twelve NYC parents, and asked for a restraining law to stop the unnecessary, unprecedented and illegal disclosure of the personal information of millions of New York State’s public school students to a corporation called inBloom Inc.  In turn, the purpose of inBloom is to provide this information to for-profit vendors, so they can data-mine and develop their software products.
Our press release is here and below, along with links to the legal briefs. The lawsuit contends that these

Vallas, Quinn and Duncan: Haiti and Illinois Vultures

Fifty schools were closed and several thousand teachers were fired in Chicago as “FAILING” schools. Who were the superintendents of those schools for 14 years prior to this decision?
Arne Duncan (2001-2009) and Paul Vallas (1995-2001).
Vallas - Duncan CPSIt staggers the mind. It is sheer insanity for these two to claim miracle cures for following their corporate education plans.
Since then, Arne Duncan has been promoted to U.S. Secretary of Education. He created Race to the Top and endorsed the private corporation CCSS, Common Core State Standards, for national prep and testing materials. New York State alone watched in awe as 70% of their students were declared as failing this corporate standard.
Paul Vallas went on to be appointed the CEO of Philadelphia schools (2002-2007) where he fired teachers, closed schools and privatized education via charters; Philadelphia schools are now declared as failing. Vallas was then appointed head of the Recovery School District of Louisiana (2007-2011) which is now declared as failing. Because Vallas was out of work for a few years from his American jobs, he got one in Haiti. President Rene Preval of Haiti gave the Inter-American Development Bank a mandate to reform the education system by creating a 5 year plan in conjunction with the Haitian National Commission and the Education Ministry. Vallas worked for the bank. In 2012 Vallas was also appointed the

State Education Commissioner John B. King Jr. was greeted by a crowd of parents and demonstrators with signs that read "Down with King" and "It's freezing and we are here -- Just wait until Election Day" as he arrived Wednesday for an education forum at Mineola High School.
Inside, the auditorium, which holds about 700, was packed with educators and parents from as many as 15 Nassau County school districts. Tickets were needed for admittance, a requirement that provoked anger from some.
The forum was scheduled to end at 6 p.m., but the time was extended -- until about 7 p.m. -- to allow more questions.

Wednesday's event was the second education forum on Long Island in as many days, part of a series of about a dozen meetings across the state meant to address hot-button issues such as student testing, the Common Core academic standards, teacher and principal evaluations, and security of data containing student information.
At Tuesday night's forum in East Setauket, King and Merryl Tisch, chancellor of the state Board of Regents, were confronted with an angry capacity crowd in the auditorium of Ward Melville High School, and the commissioner at times was shouted down while speaking or was booed.
In Garden City Park, scores of people began to assemble outside of Mineola High School 45 minutes before the forum's start.
Adam Greaves, 43, of North Bellmore said his message was meant for state legislators.
"We want change, and if the current members of the state Legislature don't want to make that change, we will elect new people," he said.
Greaves said he has a son in second grade and a daughter in fifth grade in the North Bellmore schools. He believes student testing is "ridiculous" and isn't convinced that the curriculum stemming from the Common Core standards is right for students.
"My kids are guinea pigs," he said.
Several of the demonstrators voiced discontent with being closed out of the forum and with limitations placed on approved speakers at Tuesday night's meeting.
"Despite the efforts to limit the speakers and limit the crowds, I think they are learning that we come here with one voice," said Carol Burris, principal of South Side High School in Rockville Centre.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), along with 11 other lawmakers, today proposed a bill that would help carry out President Obama’s pledge to offer every child in the country a chance to attend a high-quality preschool.
The bill, as explained in a story by Seattle Times reporter Kyung Song, would help states provide free preschool to all 3- and 4-year-olds from low- and moderate-income families.
See Song’s story for more details, but here are a few headlines: Some 50,000 Washington students could

Carry this over into the world of ed reform and what's been called the education/industrial complex and you find similar movement between government, and power philanthropy.

The latest example has Bruce Reed, assistant to President Barack Obama and chief of staff to Vice President Joe Biden, being named president of the Broad Foundation, one of the big 3 in power philanthropy, along with Gates and Walton. According to a Broad Foundation release:

Editor's note: Our guest blogger today is Roxanna Elden. She is a National Board Certified teacher in Miami, Florida. Her book, See Me After Class: Advice for Teachers by Teachers, is a funny, honest, practical guide with hundreds of stories and tips from teachers around the country. “It’s the book I needed my own first year,” she says. “It’s meant to keep the great teachers of the future in the classroom long enough to become great.”
The time frame between Halloween and Thanksgiving is often a low point for rookie teachers – so much so that the New Teacher Center has named it the “disillusionment phase.” The honeymoon period of student behavior – if there ever was one – has long ended. The hours of lost sleep have added up, and many rookie teachers are feeling particularly sensitive about the trial-and-error nature of their teaching. Naturally this season sees many new teachers reaching out to colleagues for suggestions.
But beware: Not all advice is created equal. Whether you are on the giving or receiving end, here are a few examples of common suggestions with potential pitfalls.
“Be consistent.” / “Set high expectations.” / “Stay organized.”
It is seldom helpful to redirect rookies to the general principles served up in teacher training. Chances are, new teachers have heard these suggestions and are struggling to put them into practice. In mid-November, a rookie teacher’s most pressing question is not likely to be, “Should I set high expectations?” It is more likely to
