AFT Human Rights Conference #EdJustice13

AFT Human Rights Conference:

AFT Human Rights Conference

Over the last 30 years, the AFT has organized a series of biennial Civil, Human and Women’s Rights conferences addressing a wide range of social justice issues.

This year’s conference, organized in collaboration with the National Opportunity to Learn Campaign, the National Education Association, and Communities for Public Education Reform, comes at a critical time for our members and our communities. Will public education continue to exist as a truly public institution that aspires to provide equal opportunity for all people? Will we continue to have a strong labor movement fighting for economic justice? At this moment in history, access to good public schools that prepare all students for college and career is a fundamental civil and human right.

Given the attacks on public education and public sector unions, two of our society’s most important levers for social justice, the AFT is uniquely situated to help lead the fight over the future direction of our country. But we cannot win the battle alone. The promise lies in collaborating with the community—particularly low-income and working families, and communities of color—as genuine partners to develop and organize around a shared vision for improving our schools and communities and creating a more equitable society.

It is time to reclaim the promise of public education.
