We all know that children and guns are a dangerous combination, yet many parents keep loaded guns in bedside tables or under their mattress. And Georgia law often refuses to hold those parents accountable even when children die or are injured.

On Tuesday, a Spalding County preschool student had a loaded gun in his backpack. Fortunately, a classmate told a Jordan Hill Elementary School teacher about the gun. The teacher brought the backpack and gun to the principal, who called police and the child’s parents. Luckily, no one was injured by the loaded firearm.

According to the AJC, principal Anthony Aikens used the parent notification call system to alert parents, who also received a letter Wednesday.

 “All students and families must be aware of the actions that violate school rules and understand the consequences,” Aikens stated in the message to parents. “We can avoid disciplinary action by each of you talking with your student about
