Lesson plans for Texas schools dropped after recurring criticism

A series of lesson plans for Texas public schools that has come under criticism from tea party groups and social conservatives will be discontinued after the current school year ends, a state senator announced on Monday. Senate Education Committee Chairman Dan Patrick, R-Houston, said the CSCOPE governing board agreed to remove all lesson plans from their website by Aug. 31 and will advise the 875 districts that teach the lessons that they are no longer available. Most of those are small and rural districts that use the lesson plans to save money.
“I’m pleased that the CSCOPE board has made the decision to get out of the lesson plan business,” Patrick said. “This is a positive development for students, parents, teachers and for the Regional Education Service Centers.” The CSCOPE curriculum management system was developed by the state’s 20 education service centers under their responsibility to assist school districts in meeting curriculum requirements.
