It was a solemn Friday morning in Northwest Philadelphia as students, parents and teachers grappled to come to terms with the School Reform Commission's decision on Thursday night to shutter three neighborhood schools.

Scenes from a day of protest

Protesters tried to stop the School Reform Commission from approving the District's plan to close 29 schools. After a vote, 23 schools were approved for closure.
  1. Many hundreds of protesters gathered outside School District headquarters before the 5:30 p.m. meeting of the SRC.
  2. Randi Weingarten, president of the AFT, rallied throngs of protesters, with the PFT's Jerry Jordan behind her.
