The editors of the Sun Sentinel have a bullet list of suggestions for incoming education commissioner Tony Bennett:
Seek to end the polarization. Listen hard to local school administrators, teachers and parents. Where it makes sense, be their champion. Solve problems. Don’t position yourself as an ideologue. Find common ground where we can all agree that change makes sense. Start there.
Don’t make change for the sake of change. Like Indiana, Florida jumps from reform to reform almost every year, sometimes rolling out new initiatives days before the new school year starts. Lay stable groundwork for sustained success.
For-profit education companies are spending a lot of money in Tallahassee, trying to get a bigger share of the state pie. While school choice is a good thing, especially for students not 


Is Scott Silent on Dozier Tragedy Because He Cannot Bring Himself to Say “Anthropology” ?

The images of what went on at the Dozier School for Boys are unspeakable. But as the work that University of South Florida anthropologists are doing has become a national story, Florida’s governor has been silent. Writing in the Miami Herald, Mary Jo Melone speculates why:
Although the Juvenile Justice Department has said it will cooperate further with the University of South Florida researchers — who suspect the existence of a second burial ground at Dozier — the current occupant of the governor’s mansion has been silent as a stone on the subject.
It may be that Gov. Rick Scott still doesn’t understand that much of a governor’s most important work is symbolic, and that it is vital that the man who represents the state represent its highest moral standards in both action and speech.
Or it could be that Gov. Scott knows that if he speaks about the University of South Florida investigators’ findings about Dozier, he’ll get tongue-tied when it’s time to utter the word
