Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility

American Education Week—November 11-17, 2012—presents all Americans with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate public education and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality education. The weeklong celebration features a special observance each day of the week. They include:
Monday, November 12: Veterans Day
Schools nationwide are closed in observance of the armed service veterans who have served this country, including the rising numbers of student veterans. Here are the 10 things you should know about today's student veterans.

Tuesday, November 13: Parents Day
Parents, do you want to make a difference for your child's education? Take the "Kids Not Cuts" pledge to urge Congress to stand up for kids and working families by rejecting a bad budget deal.
Wednesday, November 14: Education Support Professionals Day
Education Support Professionals keep schools running and students safe, healthy and ready to learn. Watch the "It's More Than Just a Job" videos below to learn more about ESP careers. 
Thursday, November 15: Educator for a Day
It's hard being an educator today, and even harder with looming across-the-board budget cuts know as "sequestration." As a call to action for teachers and administrators to invite aspiring educators, community leaders, parents and friends into their classrooms as “shadow teachers” during American Education Week (Nov. 11–17), the NEA Academy'spartner Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership at Walden University will award $25,000 in grants to preK–12 schools that host Educator for a Day events on Thursday, Nov. 15.
