DPS turns Catherine Ferguson, 2 other schools over to charter operator

Detroit — Three Detroit Public Schools slated to close today will instead reopen this fall under a Detroit-based charter operator, the district announced this morning.

The Blanche Kelso Bruce Academy will continue educational programs at Catherine Ferguson Academy, the Barsamian Preparatory Center and the Hancock Preparatory Center.

At Ferguson, a school that educates pregnant teens and young mothers and their children, Blanche Kelso Bruce will run the program under a charter with Wayne RESA. The school's leadership and core staff will remain, including Principal G. Asenath Andrews.

Students at Barsamian and Hancock will remain at their current facilities when Blanche Kelso Bruce takes over the programs, according to DPS. Both of those schools serve students who have had disciplinary problems.

At Barsamian, where expelled students can continue high school classes, the building could accommodate 244 students but had just 53 students in April, at a cost of $35,636 per child.

"This morning, are doing two things: First, changing the storyline," said DPS Emergency Manager Roy S.
