Extra, Extra: The Results of our High School Journalism Awards

Journalists of San Diego, watch out for these teens.

We've got winners in the first-ever voiceofsandiego.org Awards for Excellence in High School Journalism. We aim to celebrate excellence in student news and promote online platforms for high school journalism. Moving student newspapers online brings the advantages of lower cost, more frequency and relevance, and offers a learning environment that prepares students for the real world.

The contest was highly competitive, with 100 entries representing 14 schools in San Diego County.

The After-School Program on an Extraordinary Mission

In a narrow room in the industrial flats of Barrio Logan, Julio Valenzuela held up a wilting plant to a cluster of sixth graders. "Why do you think this plant looks like this?"

The children guessed. No sun. Not enough water. "It's dying," one boy said solemnly.

"This is an example of what can happen if you're not focused. If you don't feed your plant. If you don't feed your grades!" Valenzuela said, drawing a sudden connection. "Let's do a project. Can we make this plant survive?"
