Of course we should hold teachers accountable,
but this does not mean we have to pretend
that mathematical models can do something they
cannot. Of course we should rid our schools of
incompetent teachers, but value-added models are
an exceedingly blunt tool for this purpose. In any
case, we ought to expect more from our teachers
than what value-added attempts to measure.
