Viewpoints: An amazing teacher's job shouldn't be at risk

In our schools, we teach children to define and recognize irony, the literary device used to draw attention to some incongruity or irrationality. We provide examples of irony to help children understand. Sometimes we don't have to look too far for these examples.

Last week, Jody Cooperman, an outstanding English and history teacher at Sutter Middle School in east Sacramento for the past six years, was honored on national television as one of 12 semifinalists in the second annual "Top Teacher" search sponsored by "Live! With Regis and Kelly." Cooperman came to the show's attention after parents wrote heartfelt letters to producers praising her skills as an exemplary educator. One parent wrote an
