Event Date 1: April 12, 2011 08:00 am - 10:00 am

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will address the crucial role that parents play in their children’s education at Parenting Magazine’s second annual Mom Congress on Education and Learning conference at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He will give remarks at 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, before current mom delegates representing each state and Washington, D.C., as well as former mom delegates and attendees at the four-day conference April 10-13.

“If children are to succeed in school and in life, parents have to be committed and engaged in supporting their children’s education,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. “Parents are a child’s first and most important teacher—and no other job has such an enduring influence on children.”

The moms were chosen by Parenting magazine based on their accomplishments in improving local schools. The Mom Congress delegates each received an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., from Parenting to attend the event and will work with national leaders in education and advocacy, and faculty from Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies throughout the four-day conference. For more information, visitwww.parenting.com/momcongress.

Parenting magazine launched the Mom Congress initiative in March 2009 to celebrate and connect mothers who were advocating for reform in their local school systems. One mother from every state and Washington, D.C., was selected, based on a review of applications, to participate in the congress as a delegate. The conference allows the 51 delegates to meet, discuss their concerns about the nation’s schools, and share success stories.

NOTE: Media interested in attending must RSVP to Maggie Moore at (202) 687-4328 ormem95@georgetown.edu. You must have valid media credentials at check-in.
