Teachers' union asks membership to consider strike to protest state budget cuts

Downriver members of the Michigan Education Association are being asked to authorize “crisis activities up to and including job action.”

A letter requesting a vote on the issue recently was sent to the presidents of local unions by MEA President Iris Salters.

According to the letter, the vote would authorize a variety of activities ranging from a demonstration Downriver to protests in Lansing. The most drastic action authorized would be a strike.

The vote is the state union’s response to what leaders see as attacks from Lansing led by the administration of new Gov. Rick Snyder. The MEA’s concerns include an emergency financial
