Intel surprises Beaverton and Hillsboro schools with influx of Israeli families, sending principals and teachers scrambling

BEAVERTON -- Just after spring break, schools in Beaverton and Hillsboro suddenly found new families from Israel standing on their doorsteps.

Over the last three weeks, about 300 Israeli families with an estimated 400 children have come to the area. The parents are part of a five-month training program for Intel's Israeli employees.

Principals were given little information about when the new students would arrive or how many would need seats in their classrooms, leaving many schools scrambling to find workbooks, bring in additional desks and assess the students' language abilities.

Most heavily impacted are the elementaries closest to Intel's corporate housing. The majority of students have or will enroll in Beaverton schools, but Hillsboro also has registered about 12
