Union blasts district’s temp-teacher pay offer

— The president of the National School District teachers union is upset about the pay being offered to substitute teachers in preparation for a strike.

District officials are sending out letters offering $250 per day, up from the typical $100 per day, as approved by the Board of Education on Dec. 20.

Under an emergency resolution, the board also authorized the district to close a school or suspend certain programs if necessary.

“It’s too bad that they are doing that and not trying to ... go back to the table and try to negotiate with us, especially when they are saying how little money they have,” said the union president, Linda Cartwright.

Retired teachers are among those being solicited for the temporary positions, she added.

The union’s members voted to authorize a strike on Dec. 16, though it is still unclear
