Marcos Breton: Sacramento teachers union a roadblock to reform

When considering public education in Sacramento, it's easy to feel pessimistic.

It's not that there aren't great people, great teachers, great principals and great schools here.

You just get the feeling that reforms being preached by everyone from President Barack Obama to Oprah are out of reach in the capital of California.

As a result, fed-up reformers are breaking off to create alternatives to the rancid politics of public schools here.

The latest idea is from Margaret Fortune, who wants to open 10 charter schools aimed at lifting the prospects of African American students.
