School board miffed over $500K salary

Financial transparency questioned

Although outraged over the half-million-dollar salary being paid to the top executive of the California School Boards Association, one local school district has decided to continue its membership in the association.

The Las Virgenes Unified School District Board of Education sent a letter to CSBA condemning director Scott Plotkin’s annual salary, which reached $539,000 in 2008.

Las Virgenes school board President Gordon Whitehead said the board could not continue membership with the organization unless CSBA demonstrated financial transparency. Whitehead wrote a letter to CSBA president Frank Pugh that was distributed to school boards in the Conejo Valley, Moorpark, Oak Park and Simi Valley.

Despite their concerns, the Las Virgenes board voted 5-0 to remain in the CSBA.
