In a stunning example of the power of the Internet to connect the smartest minds on a problem, scholars at UC Berkeley and Stanford have built a free website, called MathOverflow, that is transforming math research. The question-and-answer format is simple. But each small solution builds toward a larger understanding -- and proves that mass collaboration can greatly expand human problem-solving abilities.
