At age 10, Kobel couldn't grasp the significance of a kindly Vancouver couple setting aside $100 a month for her college education through Marathon Education Partners, a Portland-based, long-term scholarship program. Suburban high school teachers stretched thin, and Portland's likely to join them

Nationally, high schools have a full-time teacher for every 12 students. But in Oregon, it's 1:20 -- and about to get worse. If Portland cuts one-tenth of its high school faculty, its staffing levels will resemble those in local suburban high schools -- and those levels are painful, educators say. Full story »
