NEWARKSchools superintendent Clifford Janey's contract states that the state's education commissioner is required to tell him by Sept. 1 if his three-year contract will be renewed in 2011, and the state has not given any indication to their leanings, a report on NJ Spotlight said.
The superintendent for the district, controlled by the state since 1995, is appointed by the governor and education commissioner, according to the report. Janey, who had been a superintendent at Washington D.C., was appointed by then-Gov. Jon Corzine in 2008 after a contentious search, the report said. Newark Mayor Cory Booker has been adamant about mayoral control of the school system once the state's power recedes.
