Sacramento school district to vote on Race to the Top submission

The Sacramento City Unified School District school board will vote Thursday on whether they will participate in round two of Race to the Top funding.
School districts have to submit their request by Friday to participate in the second round, which features $4 billion in education grants.
California lost out on up to $700 million in federal education money during the first round of Race to the Top, with reviewers citing the state's lack of union support as a factor in the denial. In the first application, about half of local districts said they would participate and in those districts, only a quarter of the teachers unions signed on.
California's weak data system for tracking student performance also played a role in the first-round defeat.
California came in 27th among 41 applicants, winning 354 points out of a possible 500. Only Delaware and Tennessee were selected in the first round.
