Every year, an independent federal agency called the National Endowment for the Humanities offers summer study opportunities through its Division of Education Programs by awarding educational grants to school teachers. Teacher opportunities are either summer seminars or institute studies based on topics within the study of humanities and are held either in states around the United States or out of the country. Created in 1965, the National Endowment for the Humanities grant agency strongly promotes and supports the teaching and learning of humanities in our nation’s schools and colleges. For summer 2010, 30 different seminar and institute study opportunities were available to select from for interested grant applicants.
Having applied along with nearly 230 other teachers for the same 25 to 30 participant spots was a teacher from Rio Americano High School in Sacramento. Hoping to win a grant for a summer institute program located in Mexico, teacher Antonio Losada had his application packet enthusiastically submitted before the March 2010 deadline. Education First is currently looking for host families in Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, Carmichael and other cities in the Sacramento area for the dates of June 30 to July 26 for international students participating in a 3 1/2 week summer program. Participating students in the Sacramento summer program will be 13 to 18 years old and coming from the countries of France, Spain, Denmark and Norway. This can be an exciting opportunity for the community, especially homes with students of their own, to get involved with breaking down barriers
