HISD's Saavedra to join A&M faculty

Go ahead, get those Aggie jokes ready. My editor is a University of Texas graduate so I'm sure he won't mind. Former Houston ISD Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra, who stepped down Aug. 31, will join the faculty of Texas A&M's College of Education and Human Development on Sept. 1.

A year away from HISD appears to have treated Saavedra well (note how relaxed he looks in the photo in A&M's news release).

Saavedra will teach graduate-level courses in the superintendency, school finance and human resource administration. He also will work with teacher interns and will direct the Administrative Leadership Institute, an annual conference for school leaders.

"I think we can build on the work that the public school administration program has done up to this point," Saavedra said in the news release. "Texas A&M has such a great advantage over other higher education institutions in its proximity to an urban area such as Houston."

Now that Saavedra's back in the public sector, here's hoping he'll return my phone calls. He
