In the 1970s, a movement was started to spread the importance of public understanding about the need for concern about autism. Public awareness of this form of developmental disability was not widely known or understood during this time and even today is still being researched. Autism affects a person’s communication abilities and can make socialization a great challenge. Classified as a spectrum disorder, autism can affect individuals in different ways and on different levels. April is National Autism Awareness Month teacher with a credential acknowledging her as Severely Handicapped Specialist.
