State budget cut foes march in Valley



A group of eight marchers headed down rural stretches of roadway between Reedley and Sanger on Saturday to call attention to state budget cuts to education, health and public safety.
The "Fight for California's Future" protest march is a 260-mile trek that began March 5 in Los Angeles and will wrap up April 21 in Sacramento.
But before they finish the Valley leg of the trek, marchers will host a noon rally Monday in front of the fountain at Fresno City College. "This is about raising awareness in the Central Valley in some of the counties hardest hit by the cuts," said Jenn Laskin, a teacher with Pajaro Unified School District in Watsonville. Laskin has seen many of her colleagues handed written notice in recent weeks that they could lose their jobs because of state cuts.
Organizers said the goal of the march is twofold: To inform the public that state jobs and services are being compromised, and to put pressure on elected officials to halt the cuts and find different ways to balance the state budget, such as by increasing taxes on the state'
