KCBS - California Could Face Teacher Shortage

KCBS - California Could Face Teacher Shortage

For the first time in many years, California has a surplus of teachers but an expert on education says the state will be facing another teacher shortage in the next few years.
ListenKCBS' Bob Butler reports
Former state schools chief Delaine Eastin says many teachers are retiring and finding their replacements will be hard.
"Right now the real challenge is that the University of California and CSU have gotten so expensive and the privates are out of this world," she said. "There are people looking around saying, 'I can't afford to borrow $120,000 to be a teacher."
Eastin says some districts may have to lower their standards in order to staff the schools.
