SELLOUT: Why the NJEA’s testing compromise with Christie was a mistake

Remember?
Remember?

The problem with the compromise reached between the Christie Administration and the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) over the uses of high-stakes testing is this: The teachers’ union, rightly concerned about inappropriate uses of test results to evaluate teachers, won valuable, if temporary,  protections for its members. However, the union,  which has, for months, promoted a partnership with parent groups and others concerned about the damage the tests would do to students achieved no protections at all for children.
The union was happy to allow organizations like Save Our Schools—New Jersey to provide it with political cover so that its self-interested opposition to wrong-headed teacher evaluations could genuinely appear to be a much broader concern with the corporate reform movement that is driving much of these changes. The NJEA did everything it could to assume leadership of this growing and increasingly comprehensive anti-corporate movement but, in the end, in the last few days,  it took what short-term advantages it could get and ran, abandoning the larger issues embraced by its former partners.
Teacher unions historically have invoked broader interests to promote their own self-interest. Nothing new about that. What is new, however, is a toxic political climate in which that strategy produces nothing but anger that is often aimed at classroom teachers and even the institution of public education itself. Chris Christie tapped into a deep well of resentment  against that strategy back in 2009 and 2010 by repeatedly and unfairly bashing teachers and their unions for their “greed” and SELLOUT: Why the NJEA’s testing compromise with Christie was a mistake | Bob Braun's Ledger:

With 8 weeks until school starts, Sacramento charter starts from scratch

The paint is fresh. The rooms are clean. All that’s needed at fledgling New Joseph Bonnheim Community Charter School are the students.
It has been less than a month since Sacramento City Unified School District trustees narrowly approved parents’ bid to reopen the elementary campus in south Sacramento and run it as a charter school. In a June presentation, proponents expected to enroll 323 students by the Sept. 8 start of class.
Now, with less than eight weeks left, the pressure is on. The district will deliver furniture and equipment in the coming weeks, said Dennis Mah, who describes himself as an architect of the New Bonnheim effort after having founded the Yav Pem Suab Academy, another charter school on South Land Park Drive.
Bonnheim is one of seven campuses the district closed in mid-2013 because of falling enrollment, and many students were shifted to Peter Burnett or Earl Warren elementary schools.
Last month, trustees Jay Hansen, Christina Pritchett, Diana Rodriguez and Gustavo Arroyo, the last of whom represents the neighborhood, provided the bare four-vote majority to go forward. They did so despite warnings from district staff that the plan, as proposed, did not fully explain its programs and was unlikely to succeed.
Representatives of the district and the Sacramento City Teachers Association are working out a process for posting jobs and hiring teachers, Mah said. Then teachers must coordinate their lesson plans for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. But hiring is still weeks away, since the number of teachers will depend on how many students are enrolled.
As of Thursday afternoon, the third day of the registration drive, about 100 students had signed up.
That came after volunteers began walking the neighborhood, knocking on doors and contacting parents. Among them were Arthur Aleman, one of three leaders of the charter drive. His granddaughter, Destiny Silva, is signed up to start the fifth grade at Bonnheim.
Manuel Duenas and his sons Cristiano, 4, and Adriano, 2, were in front of their home when Aleman showed up, fliers in hand. Duenas said later he had learned about Bonnheim three weeks ago from family friends. On Thursday, he was enthusiastic.
Cristiano, who will be 5 in August, “was supposed to be enrolled at Earl Warren (Elementary School),” Duenas said. That changed after he researched plans for New Bonnheim.

Arne Duncan flubbed on Common Core, and then he made it worse - LA Times:

Opinion

Arne Duncan flubbed on Common Core, and then he made it worse

The scaffolding of support for the Common Core curriculum standards continues, right and left, to lose a beam here, a platform there. After adopting the standards, with vocal support from the governor, both the Oklahoma Legislature and Gov. Mary Fallin have now abandoned them. The American Federation of Teachers was once a big supporter. At its meeting over the weekend, though it didn't switch to outright opposition, it voted to set up grants for teachers to critique or reformulate the standards.

Some of this — especially among the red states that have pulled away to one extent or another — is more political than educational. Even though many Republicans were among the notable figures endorsing the standards from the beginning, now politicians are more interested in pushing the “federal overreach” button as a way of denying President Obama a victory of any kind, especially right before an election.

But the Obama administration has to take the lion’s share of the blame for the uproar over Common Core. The early arm-twisting to get states to adopt it was one problem; with the standards attached to waivers from No Child Left Behind, instead of arising from states looking to improve their students’ ability to succeed in college and jobs, there was bound to be some buyers’ remorse.

But far worse were poor implementation policies supported all along the way by Education Secretary Arne Duncan. It happened too fast, with too little review. Worse, it happened with an unconscionable emphasis on holding everyone responsible right away for how students fared on a new curriculum and new Arne Duncan flubbed on Common Core, and then he made it worse - LA Times:

Teachers of Color Caught In The Windmill (On Real Equity) - The Jose Vilson:

Teachers of Color Caught In The Windmill (On Real Equity)

donquixote1
Last week, I delved a little deeper into this issue of teachers of color, hoping to sow some of the prevailing narratives up and construct something more cogent.
Yet, when it comes down to it, the lack of teachers of color is a symptom and not a cause of the education gaps we currently see.
Time and again, we get reports from former teachers of color about why they leave, and often, it’s the same symptoms for why teachers in general leave: lack of empowerment and autonomy, working conditions, and low pay. With teacher of color, education systems only exacerbate this problem because many teachers of color come back so they could give back to similar communities that they grew up in. Yet, they see some of the same deficiencies from their childhoods manifest in teachers’ lounges and observations about their colleagues. Because many teachers of color who come from similar neighborhoods they’re serving don’t have a family-established wealth to fall back on, they tend to leave at faster rates than the average teacher, too.
But there’s more. This research by Ivory Toldson done on this topic suggests that lack of teachers of color isn’t for lack of want, and that systemic elements of our education system will continue to put people of color at odds with their education system, regardless

Free Minds/Free People

Bernardine and I met up with our old pal Jeff Jones, jumped in the car and headed off to the Oregon Country Fair outside Eugene where we’d been asked to speak about the political moment we were living through—Occupy your Imagination; Free Minds/Free People. It was a Blues Brothers road trip—we were on a mission from God.
The Fair was an insurgency from the 60’s transformed and institutionalized in a mere half century. New Age meets the New Millennium as capitalism consumes the counter-culture. Where tie-dye and incense, pipes and rolling papers, long hair and funny hats, as well as bubbling pots of free brown rice and red beans and tofu/vegetable stew had been a few of the markers of the rebellion, all of it was now de rigueur and for sale in every corner. Where the battle with the cops and the health authorities over the right to crash in a tangle of unruly humanity overnight on the land had been pitched in the early years, the original hippies were now the gray heads who owned the land and issued the permits. A rainbow of wristbands demarcated where folks could wander, and the most prized were the gold ones—which the three of us were miraculously granted—allowing fair-goers access everywhere as well as the extraordinary privilege of staying after-hours when things really got going. One of my favorite moments was sitting with the old-timers one night after the Fair had been officially closed and the grounds swept of the riff-raff, listening to the stories of how folks snuck into the Fair and evaded the sweeps in the sweet long ago of their glorious youth—when they were the Free Minds/Free People | Bill Ayers:
