Community schools try offering dental, health care and other services

By
Struggling schools and students in disadvantaged communities are at ground zero as high school graduation and college completion rates become a growing national priority.
But what about the economic, family, medical, and emotional needs that interfere with a student’s learning each and every day in underserved urban and rural communities?
For example, dental problems alone keep students in California out of school an estimated 874,000 days a year, costing schools about $29.7 million in lost attendance based-funding, according to the UCLA Center for Health Policy’s 2007 California Health Interview Survey

A traditional school can’t do much about dental health. However, a “community school” with adequate resources can work wonders.
And it’s not just dental health. Community schools can identify and bring together resources to meet needs around primary health care, emotional and behavioral health, and even family trauma that inhibit learning.
A community school is more than a learning institution: It is a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources integrating academics, health and social services, youth, family and community engagement. This focus leads to improved student learning, stronger families, and healthier communities. And a new report from Child Trends documents the positive impact that this kind of integrated-service approach has on academics, attendance and high school dropout rates.
Many community schools offer curricula that emphasize real-world learning and community problem-solving. They become centers of the community and when done right, are open to everyone — all day, every day, evenings and weekends. They maximize existing and oftentimes untapped resources in a community to improve efficiencies in the process of schooling.

Here in New Mexico, state policymakers are getting it. After seeing the positive results in our Elev8 community schools – which are part of a national community school effort focused on middle grades – the legislature last year passed the Community Schools Act and the governor signed it.
The legislation, which received bipartisan support, will encourage struggling schools to adopt the community school approach and sets new standards for how such schools operate, in partnership with community organizations. Sun-Times tells Karen Lewis to "tone it down".

Sun-Times KMA
In the eyes of the Sun-Times editorial board, CTU Pres. Karen Lewis has gotten too uppity and disrespectful for Rahm's Chicagoland Plantation. In yesterday's editorial, the board told Lewis in no uncertain terms, as only a parent could scold a child, to "tone down your rhetoric." Problem is, Karen Lewis is a grown woman.

What nerve she has, an African-American, female school teacher, marching right in to the Billionaire Boys and Girls Club, otherwise known as the City Club and calling for a “LaSalle Street Tax.” Doesn't she know that the wealthy traders who gamble daily at the Merc will blow their tops and flee the city if their pot is raked by a half-penny tax of every trade? It's certain that they'll all pack up their North Shore abodes and set up shop in umm err...DuBuque? And it will all be Lewis' fault

Not only that. They say Lewis used unseemly language, insinuating that the corporations are motivated by greed. The board gives Lewis permission to say some things...
Go after their policies. Go after the way money can buy influence. But to go after their motives, to suggest they’re mere greedy billionaires looking to make another buck, isn’t helpful.
No Karen, warns the board. It's not helpful, especially to the Mayor, who obviously feels Mike Klonsky's SmallTalk Blog: Sun-Times tells Karen Lewis to "tone it down".:

Weingarten Wants Common Core; Lewis Says We’re Done

May 7, 2014

In spring 1991, I completed my student teaching at Ascension High School in Gonzales, Louisiana. I taught Lord of the Flies, a creepy novel about the dangers of groupthink.
So often when I think of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) Unity Caucusmindset of unquestioned (and unquestionable) allegiance to a single position on an issue impacting teachers and the teaching profession, I think of Lord of the Flies.
American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten hails from that Unity Caucus mindset, and it has shown itself time andagain (and again and again) in her unwavering allegiance to the never-tested, secretly-c0ncocted, corporate-benefiting Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
Then there is Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Karen Lewis.
CTU once had its own Lord of the Flies Unity Caucus. However, according to Lewis, the CTU Unity Caucus died with her re-election in 2013.
I can’t imagine Lewis bending to groupthink.
I first came to “know” Lewis through writing my book, A Chronicle of EchoesThe book includes three chapters on the history of mayoral control of education in Chicago. Lewis is a major part of that history.
In February 2014, I had the pleasure of meeting Lewis for the first time during her travels to New Orleans for the AFT Executive Council meeting. We had dinner one evening, and I asked Lewis to dump CCSS. She told me that she needed to act in a Weingarten Wants Common Core; Lewis Says We’re Done | deutsch29:
