Teaching to the Test Comes as a Wolf in Sheep's Clothing to PS 154 in the Bronx

On New Year's Day, 2014 the staff of PS 154 received its weekly commandments, er, proclamations, oops, announcements from DR Alison Coviello; PhD and Principal of PS 154 in the Bronx. Several staff members contacted The Crack Team with a directive from DR Alison Coviello; PhD and
Principal that raised some eyebrows;
 ....reading and math teachers in grades 3 – 5 identified students (making up 15% of the grade) who have the potential to achieve Levels 3 or 4 on the upcoming State assessments. Please keep these goals in mind and make plans to achieve them. You may have to think out of the box in terms of how you help particular students. For example, some teachers noted that particular students have the intellectual capability, but currently lack the stamina. We discussed working with these students on a weekly basis to take longer and longer practice assessments as a means to simply build their stamina.

Other teachers talked about the necessity to meet with parents or for me to speak with parents so that students will attend before or after school clubs. I have done this with four parents thus far (as specifically requested by the teacher) and have been successful at getting 2 out of 4 of these students to attend the extra clubs. Who is poisoning our children and causing them to fail high stakes tests?

Who is poisoning our children and causing them to fail high stakes tests?
No, this is not a joke, satire or fictional situation. It has been going on for several years. The persons who are doing this are not being prosecuted. The persons involved are doing it for personal profit. Let’s connect the dots to a logical conclusion.
  • Lead poisoning causes brain damage in children. Even the consumption or inhalation of lead at mere dust levels causes measurable brain damage and accompanying learning disabilities.
  • The legal fiction of making corporations people (corporate personhood) allows banks to have human rights without full legal responsibility.
  • Banks need not disclose or remediate lead-based paint or other flaws – even though actual human beings who sell homes are required to do so.
  • Children are failed, teachers are fired, schools are closed, state and federal funds are denied (Common Core State Standards, Race to the Top, etc.) to communities which are devastated by the low scores of children in poor urban areas and children in middle class and affluent areas of older vintage homes.
Child with cashIn spite of many people who deny the affects of lead poisoning as they serve as “experts” in legal cases, lead paint consumption by children causes brain damage and

North Carolina Standardized Testing in Question Due to Common Core Backlash | Truth in American Education:

North Carolina Standardized Testing in Question Due to Common Core Backlash

nc-state-flagThe Raleigh News & Observer published a story yesterday entitled “Common Core backlash casts shadow on future testing in NC.”  Sounds dramatic doesn’t it?
Basically the North Carolina Legislature threw a monkey wrench in the North Carolina State Board of Education’s plans by not funding the Smarter Balanced Assessments.  Those pesky legislators!
North Carolina has been part of a group of states guiding the creation of a national test called SMARTER Balanced, which is tied to Common Core standards for reading and math. The thought was that students statewide would begin taking the national exams next year.
The Common Core State Standards establish a clear and consistent map for what students should learn from kindergarten through high school to prepare them better for college and careers. North Carolina is one of 45 states to adopt the standards.
But a Common Core backlash, driven by critics who question the state’s decision to hand over control of its education standards to national groups, has complicated the decision on
