MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry mocked Geraldo Rivera's incendiary comments about slain teenager Trayvon Martin with biting sarcasm on Saturday.
Martin was unarmed when he was shot to death by a self-appointed neighborhood watch volunteer. His killing and the controversial police handling of the casehave provoked outrage across the country. On Friday, Rivera created a firestorm when he said that Martin was partially responsible for his death because he was wearing a hoodie. "I'll bet you money, if he didn't have that hoodie on, that nutty neighborhood watch guy wouldn't have

Philip Altbach: A New Twist— In-Country Branch Campuses

Philip G. Altbach at Inside Higher Ed - 29 minutes ago
Blog: The World View Not long ago, Northeastern University, a private university in Boston, opened a branch in Charlotte, North Carolina, and will open another one in Seattle, Washington later this year. These branches will offer specialized master’s degrees in applied fields relevant to the local area. Why is Northeastern moving away from its home base? To generate additional revenue, of course. Northeastern is not alone in this latest entrepreneurial trend. Other universities seem to be looking beyond their own campuses for new markets without confronting the complications of wo... more »

The Final Candidates

Blog: Provost Prose We are just completing our search for the founding dean of our School of Engineering and Applied Science. The finalists are all impressive but the search process itself has also been impressive. In doing a search, the process and transparency matter as much as the results. This was made clear in a recent conversation with a friend who is visiting another school for a semester. This school doesn’t have a tradition of shared governance, doesn’t provide for a strong faculty voice even on faculty issues, doesn’t have open searches for key positions, and doesn’t ... more »
