Lobato 8/2: A history lesson

Lobato v. State illustrationWhat did the creators of Colorado’s 1876 constitution mean when they required the legislature to “provide for the establishment and maintenance of a thorough and uniform system of free public schools throughout the state”?

Tom Romero, an assistant law professor at the University of Denver, tried to answer than question Tuesday afternoon during testimony at the Lobato v. State school finance lawsuit.

The central claim by plaintiffs in the case is that the state’s current school finance system doesn’t meet the constitutional requirement for “thorough and uniform” and that the system should be declared unconstitutional

Arne Duncan's Brave New Tests

I posted a comment following Linda-Darling Hammond's speech (posted on Valerie Strauss' answer-sheet. Darling-Hammond said this: We are here because we want to prepare children for the 21st century world they are entering, not for an endless series of multiple-choice tests.

My comment:

Education secretary Arne Duncan claims he is also against fill-in-the-blank "bubble" tests. In a speech "Beyond the bubble tests," he described his plan for new assessments that will "provide students with realistic, complex

Krashen elaborates on the problem of testing; clearly he's been reading my posts.

Obama's Education Team
Ok I'm dreaming. Krashen has been writing about this problem for centuries. The important point is that we have to keep asking our reformy overlords specific questions about the amount of testing they think is appropriate, and whether or not the children of elites

Matt Damon speaks before the Save Our Schools March in Washington this past Saturday, July 30.
Because the debt ceiling debate almost created a black hole that would have destroyed everything everywhere ever dominated the news cycle all weekend, a certain event in Washington basically got no media coverage. Thousands of concerned parents, teachers, and activists held a rally and march in near the White House called Save Our Schools.
The rally caught the attention of several leaders in the field of education. A spokesperson from Save Our Schools tells us that Jon Stewart sent the group a video to play at the rally. He couldn't be there personally because, according to the SOS March media relations boss, Stewart was/is in Afghanistan (USO Tour?).
But one Hollywood celebrity traveled all night taking three flights to be there... Matt Damon. Damon's mom is a teacher, and he gave a speech talking about what his public education has done for him. Lawrence will talk much more about all of this in tonight's Rewrite.

State education department asks board to yank Abramson's charter

The top education official in Louisiana is asking the state board of education to revoke the Pelican Educational Foundation's contract to run Abramson Science and Technology Charter School in eastern New Orleans.

abramson_charter_school_exterior.jpgFour teachers at the Abramson Science & Technology Charter School reported a 'general feeling of fear' among the school's staff because of what appeared to be retaliation against teachers, parents and students who had spoken up about the school's practices.

In a written recommendation to the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, or BESE, acting state Superintendent Ollie Tyler said an investigation launched last month has uncovered evidence that Abramson has failed to comply with state law, board policy and its charter contract.

Tyler said the investigation is still ongoing, but "since our investigation has already yielded findings and documentation that indicate a threat to the safety, health and welfare of students at Abramson, I am
