In a stunning development, where as I usually am seated in the back of the hall at both IEA and NEA Representative Assemblies, this year I am seated in the first seat of row one in the hall. Perhaps leadership believes they can buy me off with this. It is possible. It is nice up there. Seated with me are my followers.
Tonight is Friendship Night at the NEA Representative Assembly. Arne Duncan is not invited. At least by the delegates.
They voted in favor of a New Business Item that offers up a condemnation of the Obama Education boss. Second year in a row.
But that didn’t keep President Dennis Van Roekel from including a strong call for an early no strings
As a follow-up to my previous piece, “Unschooling Rather Than Highschooling”, I want to bring you up to date on my two kids’s unschooling sagas as they continue to choose to chart their own course as young adults. Neither Eric or Emma has chosen to go to college (though Emma has taken several community college and university extension classes). Instead, they have continued to launch their own projects, some successful and others significant failures, but all profound learning experiences moving them along their developmental paths.
It’s ironic that neither has chosen to enroll in higher education given the family pedigree. Their four grandparents all have college degrees, including one PhD. Their mom has two Masters, one in public health and a second in marriage and family therapy, while I have two Bachelors, one in speech and the other in computer science.
I saw a post from Monty Neil that NEA has endorsed the SOS March. That's an excellent development and as it should be and I'm totally happy for both organizations. I hope it's an accurate report.
I just don't get how an organization that endorses the SOS March can also possibly consider a crazy-early endorsement of President Obama without extracting a single conciliatory gesture from him first.
The SOS March has several Guiding Principles that are in opposition to several of the President's policies, as set out in the Blueprint and in the Race to the Top. It's an event that is in the whole opposed to Barack Obama's policies, not the policies of some yet-to-be-determined Republican, or the policies of a yet-to-be-determined primary challenger to the President.
